BAMS is a 5.5-year undergraduate medical program in India comprising 4.5 years of academic study followed by a 1-year compulsory rotating internship. The curriculum is aligned with the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) framework and covers core Ayurveda (Dravyaguna, Rasa Shastra, Kayachikitsa, Panchakarma, Shalya, Shalakya, Kaumarbhritya, Prasuti & Stri Roga) along with foundational modern subjects such as anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology basics, microbiology, and community medicine. Students learn Ayurvedic diagnostics (Nidana), treatment planning, drug formulation, and therapeutic procedures including Panchakarma, along with clinical case-taking and patient management. Clinical postings in affiliated hospitals/OPDs start early and intensify in later professional years, while the internship provides hands-on rotations across major Ayurveda specialties and community health settings. India has about 254 BAMS colleges, offering opportunities across government, aided, and private institutions.
