BDS in India is a 5-year undergraduate medical programme comprising 4 years of academic study and 1 year of compulsory rotatory internship. The curriculum is designed to build strong foundations in basic medical sciences such as Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry and Pathology, along with core dental subjects including Oral Anatomy, Dental Materials, Periodontology, Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Prosthodontics, Orthodontics, Pedodontics, Oral Medicine and Radiology, and Public Health Dentistry. Training gradually shifts from pre-clinical laboratory work to chairside clinical practice, where students learn patient examination, diagnosis, treatment planning, infection control and dental procedures under supervision. Admissions are primarily through NEET-UG followed by centralized counselling (AIQ/State quota) and seat allocation in government, private and deemed universities. India has around 418 BDS colleges, offering wide options across states with varying fee structures and clinical exposure.
