Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) is an undergraduate paramedical degree that trains students to assess, diagnose, and manage movement and functional disorders. The course focuses on rehabilitation through exercise therapy, electrotherapy, and manual techniques. It combines strong medical science foundations with extensive clinical training and internship in hospitals and rehabilitation settings.
BPT in India is a 4.5-year undergraduate programme designed to develop competent physiotherapy professionals who can restore, maintain, and improve physical function and mobility. The curriculum covers anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, biomechanics, exercise therapy, electrotherapy, and physiotherapy in orthopaedics, neurology, cardiopulmonary conditions, sports, geriatrics, and community health. Students learn patient assessment, clinical reasoning, treatment planning, and documentation, along with safe use of physiotherapy equipment and therapeutic modalities. Clinical postings begin during the course and culminate in a compulsory internship (generally 6 months) in hospitals/clinics, where students gain hands-on exposure to OPD and IPD rehabilitation, ICU-based chest physiotherapy, post-operative rehab, and neurological recovery. Graduates can work in hospitals, rehabilitation centres, sports and fitness setups, community health programmes, and private practice, and may pursue higher studies such as MPT to specialise further.
