BUMS in India is a 5.5-year undergraduate medical programme in the AYUSH stream that integrates classical Unani medicine with foundational modern medical sciences. The curriculum typically covers anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, microbiology, pharmacology, forensic medicine, community medicine, and clinical subjects, alongside core Unani disciplines such as Kulliyat (basic principles), Ilmul Advia (pharmacology/materia medica), Ilmul Amraz (pathology), and Ilaj bit Tadbeer (regimenal therapy). Students learn patient evaluation, diagnosis, formulation and dispensing of Unani drugs, and evidence-informed clinical decision-making under supervision. Clinical postings across OPD/IPD, emergency basics, and community outreach are part of the training. The programme ends with a compulsory rotating internship that builds hands-on competence in Unani clinical practice, pharmacy, and public health exposure. With growing acceptance of integrative healthcare, BUMS graduates find opportunities in government health services, AYUSH hospitals/dispensaries, wellness and integrative clinics, research, teaching, and pharmaceutical manufacturing/quality roles.
