Diploma in Pharmacy (D.Pharm) in India is a 2-year diploma programme regulated by the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) and is designed to build foundational knowledge and practical skills for pharmacy practice. The curriculum focuses on drug formulation and dispensing, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacology basics, pharmacognosy (crude drugs and natural products), and hospital/community pharmacy operations. Students learn prescription interpretation, dosage calculations, storage and inventory practices, and patient counseling for safe medicine use. Practical lab work is a key component, covering compounding, pharmaceutical analysis, and identification of crude drugs. Most institutions also include a compulsory practical training/internship component (commonly around 500 hours) in a hospital or community pharmacy as per PCI norms, helping students gain real-world exposure to dispensing, record keeping, and regulatory requirements. After completing D.Pharm and meeting state pharmacy council requirements, graduates can register as a pharmacist and work in retail pharmacies, hospitals, wholesale distribution, or pursue further studies such as B.Pharm.
