DM (Doctorate of Medicine) is a 3-year super specialty medical degree in India designed to develop advanced expertise in a specific medical discipline such as Cardiology, Neurology, Nephrology, Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, Medical Oncology, Clinical Haematology, and more (specialties vary by institute). The program is largely hospital-based and focuses on high-volume clinical exposure, critical decision-making, multidisciplinary coordination, and mastery of specialty procedures. Training typically includes outpatient and inpatient care, emergency duties, ICU/critical care exposure relevant to the specialty, procedural skills, case presentations, seminars, journal clubs, morbidity and mortality reviews, and regular assessments. A mandatory research component (dissertation/thesis) strengthens skills in study design, biostatistics, ethics, and evidence-based practice. In India, there are about 169 colleges offering DM across various super specialty departments, and admissions are primarily through national-level entrance examinations followed by counselling.
