MBBS in India is a 5.5-year undergraduate medical program comprising 4.5 years of academic study followed by a 1-year compulsory rotatory internship in recognized hospitals. The curriculum begins with foundational subjects such as Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry, then progresses to para-clinical areas like Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Forensic Medicine and Community Medicine. Clinical training is a major component, with postings in Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, ENT, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Psychiatry and Emergency Medicine. Students learn patient history taking, examination, diagnostic reasoning, communication, ethics and basic procedures through bedside teaching, simulations and case discussions. In India, MBBS is offered across a large network of medical colleges (known total colleges: 693). After completing the degree and internship, graduates can pursue registration, work as junior doctors/medical officers, or opt for postgraduate specialisation (MD/MS/DNB) and super-speciality pathways.
