MSW is a 2-year postgraduate programme in Arts & Humanities designed to develop trained social work professionals who can plan, implement, and evaluate social welfare and development programmes. The curriculum typically includes social work theories and methods (casework, group work, community organisation), social policy and legislation, research methods, programme management, and professional ethics. A defining component of MSW in India is supervised fieldwork/agency placement across semesters, where students gain hands-on exposure in areas such as child welfare, mental health, medical and psychiatric social work, livelihoods, rural development, disability rehabilitation, and urban community development. Many universities allow specialisations in the second year, depending on the department’s focus. After completion, graduates can work in NGOs and international development organisations, hospitals, schools, government social justice departments, CSR and ESG teams, and community-based organisations. The course also provides a strong base for higher studies and research such as MPhil/PhD (as per applicable regulations) and eligibility for roles requiring professional social work training.
