PhD in Education is a doctoral-level research programme focused on advanced study of teaching-learning processes, educational policy, curriculum, assessment, and educational leadership. It trains scholars to conduct original research, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and contribute to evidence-based improvements in education systems. The programme typically includes coursework (where applicable), comprehensive research methodology training, and a full-time research thesis. Graduates commonly work in universities, research organisations, government bodies, and education-focused NGOs/think tanks.
A PhD in Education in India is designed for candidates aiming to become independent researchers and academic leaders in the education sector. The programme generally spans 3–5 years and involves rigorous training in research methodology, quantitative and qualitative analysis, academic writing, and research ethics. Scholars undertake a literature-driven research problem, develop a proposal, and conduct original research culminating in a doctoral thesis and viva-voce. Common specialisations include teacher education, curriculum and instruction, educational psychology, inclusive education, educational technology, policy and planning, and assessment and evaluation. Many universities follow UGC regulations, requiring coursework and periodic progress reviews, along with publications/presentations as per institutional norms. The programme builds strong competencies in data analysis, theoretical framing, and scholarly communication. PhD Education holders contribute to higher education teaching, policy research, program evaluation, learning design, and leadership roles in schools, universities, EdTech, and development sector initiatives focused on improving learning outcomes.
