GNM (General Nursing and Midwifery) is a diploma-level nursing course in India designed to develop competent entry-level nurses for hospitals, clinics, and community health services. The programme blends classroom instruction with hands-on clinical postings in areas such as medical-surgical nursing, child health nursing, mental health nursing, community health nursing, and midwifery/obstetrics. Students learn nursing foundations, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, nutrition, pharmacology basics, first aid, and ward management, along with professional ethics and communication. Clinical training is a major component, typically conducted in affiliated hospitals and community health centres where students practice vital signs monitoring, medication administration, wound care, infection control, patient education, and antenatal/postnatal care. With around 880 colleges offering GNM across India, the course remains a popular pathway into nursing employment, especially in private and government healthcare facilities. After completion and registration as per applicable state nursing council norms, graduates can pursue roles in bedside nursing, community health, and specialised units, and may also progress to higher nursing qualifications where eligible.
