UK Study Visa Applications Fall 16%
The United Kingdom recorded a 16% decline in sponsored study visa applications in the year ending August 2026, according to the latest provisional data released by the UK Home Office. The figures cover the 12-month period from September 1, 2025, to August 31, 2026.
The Home Office reported 360,700 applications from main study visa applicants, compared with the previous year. Sponsored study visa applications generally follow a seasonal pattern, with August typically seeing a peak ahead of the new academic year.
Key Figures
Category | Year Ending August 2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|
Main study visa applications | 360,700 | ↓ 16% |
Student dependant applications | 17,000 | ↓ 22% |
Main + dependant applications | 377,700 | Declined year-on-year |
Applications from student dependants also fell significantly, dropping 22% to 17,000. The Home Office noted that dependant applications have remained relatively low since immigration rules introduced in January 2024 restricted most students from bringing dependants to the UK.
The decline comes amid continued changes to the UK's immigration system. The government introduced several immigration policy measures in recent years, while a visa brake introduced in March 2026 applies to certain nationalities and represents a small proportion of sponsored study applications.
The latest figures are provisional, and final numbers will be published through the Home Office's quarterly immigration statistics. The data therefore reflects application trends rather than the number of visas ultimately granted.
